FCAT Standard 5:
SC.8.E.5.2

Vocab:
Galaxy: A large system of stars held together by mutual gravitation and isolated from similar systems by vast regions of space. Star: Any of the heavenly bodies, except the moon, appearing as fixed luminous points in the sky at night. Asteroid: A small body that orbits the sun lying between mars and jupiter Planet: a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. Black hole: a massive object, formed at the beginning of the universe or by the gravitational collapse of a star exploding as a supernova, whose gravitational field is so intense that no electromagnetic radiation can escape. Solar System: The sun together with all the planets and other bodies revolving around it. Pulsars: One of the several hundred known celestial objects, generally believed to be rapidly rotating neutron stars that emit pulses of radiation, especially radio waves. Quasars: one of over a thousand extragalactic objects, star-like in appearance and having spectra with characteristically large redshifts that are thought to be most distant and most luminous in the universe. Dwarf Planets: A celestial body revolving about the sun similar to a planet but not large enough to gravitationally clear its orbital region of most celestial bodies. |
How old is the universe? Scientists believe that the universe is around 13.8 billion years old!!!!! The universe is the totality of known or supposedly objects and phenomena throughout space. The universe contains billions of things like stars, planets, pulsars, quasars, black-holes, solar systems, asteroids etc. The universe is broken down into millions of galaxies. A galaxy contains stars, planets, and more which we break down into even smaller categories called solar systems. Earth lives in the Milky Way galaxy. We orbit the sun and millions of stars orbit us. Our solar system contains 8 planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Stars are classified into colors, size, brightness, and temperature. Stars are measured in Celsius. The universe has so many things we can't understand but we are finding out more and more everyday.
